The Jumantsubo Plain at Susaki – Hiroshige Framed Poster
The Jumantsubo Plain at Susaki – Hiroshige Framed Poster
Part of Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, his last major series before his death in 1858, this print shows the open marshland at Susaki near Fukagawa, on the eastern edge of the city. The series as a whole is considered one of the high points of Japanese landscape printmaking, and this piece carries the same flattened perspective and bold cropping that made the series so influential, including on European painters who encountered it decades later.
