Utagawa Hiroshige made this print in 1858, part of his famous run of landscape series that reshaped how ukiyo-e depicted the Japanese coastline. Satta Pass, overlooking Suruga Bay with Mount Fuji in the distance, was a well-known scenic spot on the Tōkaidō road connecting Edo and Kyoto, and Hiroshige returned to it more than once across his career. This later version reflects the calmer, more atmospheric style he moved toward in his final years.
